The Grizzlies suffered their second straight first-round sweep amid internal
turmoil. Majority owner Michael Heisley is said to be trying to sell his
share of the team. And team President Jerry West said he'll honor the final
year of his contract, which means he won't be around much longer. Jason
Williams and Stromile Swift wore armbands with suspended Bonzi Wells' number
for the last game; all three likely will not return. West has raged about
Williams and even talked privately about a buyout. Many believe West will
return to the Lakers as a consultant to salvage some sort of rebuilding.

Would everyone have the same open arms for Riles? My guess is probably
not.

But yes, the return of the Logo would be a blessing.

Beautiful! Come on back, baby. The decline began the day you left.

Now let's put Mitch "I choose Devan George over Michael Redd" Upchuck where
he belongs -- in the barf bag.

Actually West drafted Devan but Cupcake has done little for the Lakers.

West, in an interview, said he would never return to the Lakers so I
doubt it will happen. Most likely, if he leaves Memphis, he will just
retire.

Wasn't Cupchak who gave George that recidivous contract?

I don't know what a recidivous contract is. But I am guessing it's not
a good thing. If you have to harp on every mistake someone makes, then
remember that Jerry West once signed Benoit Benjamin to the Lakers.
That in and of itself should keep Jerry off the most valuable
executives list forever.

Yes, after first declining to pick up the option on the final year of
George's
original contract. The Lakers then used the mid level exception, IIRC, to
re-sign George. It would have been nice to pick up the option on his final
season at a lower salary, evaluate him for another season and still have the
MLE
to get someone else who could have added a little depth to the front court
at a
time when the Lakers badly needed it.

Mostly lurking.....and working as a volunteer (computer consulting) for a
couple of non-profits in my area. I got bored being retired while my wife
is still working and needed more to do. I had fun with the volunteering for
about a year but I'm taking a little time off from that now. I have some
extra time now for the newsgroups. I just can't bring myself to get a real
job. :-)

Well, if that's your criteria, then you should know that Jerry drafted
George.

You know, of course, I'm talking about the summer of '03, when George was
resigned/extended/recidivized for more money than Redd got from the Bucks.
