After reaching an agreement with free-agent power forward Stromile Swift two
weeks ago, the Rockets turned their attention to landing a veteran guard for
their backcourt.

The player atop their wish list - Houston resident Damon Stoudamire - had
expressed an interest in joining the team.

But according to sources, Stoudamire and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed
on a four-year, $17 million deal that will be finished when the NBA lifts
its moratorium on signings. The NBA and the players' union finished talks
and completed their deal early today, clearing the way for teams to start
making deals.

How much "veteran" guard in their back court they need?
Jon Barry, Bob Sura are not "veteran" guards?
And to think that they also have T-Mac who is a guard/forward,

That is good news, I was actually scared that he may end up with the
Lakers, we don't need another Chucky Atkins.

I don't know how or why, but Houston always looks unstoppable on paper
before the season plays. And almost every year, their record seems like
a disappointment compared to popular opinion and the predictions of
sportswriter.

Not to mention David Wesley. And Mike James, right? They spent
all of last season stockpiling guards that couldn't play point
but were too small to play any significant time at SG. At one
point they had like seven of them.

Stoudamire says he doesn't
Houston, Memphis, Miami and the L.A. Lakers are rumored to be interested in
the free agent point guard
Tuesday, August 02, 2005Houston? Memphis? Miami?
Damon Stoudamire claims he still doesn't know what jersey he'll wear next
season.

======

Stoudamire, 31, denied a published report that he had agreed to a four-year,
$17 million deal with Memphis. Grizzlies President Jerry West also denied
the report, but did say that Stoudamire is on his list of players to replace
Jason Williams, who is expected to be traded, and backup Earl Watson, who is
expected to sign a free agent deal elsewhere.

"We have interest," West told the Commercial Appeal of Memphis on Sunday.

================

The Grizzlies aren't the only team interested in Stoudamire, who averaged
15.8 points and 5.7 assists last season. Miami, Houston and the Los Angeles
Lakers also have indicated an interest in the 5-foot-10, 174-pound point
guard. Stoudamire indicated a preference for playing in Houston, but the
Rockets have only a $1.8 million exception contract available after signing
Stromile Swift, and it seems the only way for Stoudamire to join the Rockets
is through a sign-and-trade deal.

The Rockets reportedly have offered forwards Clarence Weatherspoon and
Juwan Howard as trade bait. However, Howard has four years and $26 million
remaining on his contract and the Blazers, who are slashing the payroll,
repeatedly have said they don't want to take on long-term deals.

"I'd love to play in Houston. They have the second-best center (Yao Ming) in
the league and one of the top-five players (Tracy McGrady)," Stoudamire
said. "And both of those guys are under 27 (years old).

"There are a lot of places I would be interested in. But I have to find a
team that's going to be good for me."

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Guard Damon Stoudamire on Friday signed a four-year
contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, who traded Jason Williams and Bonzi
Wells earlier this week.

The 10-year veteran spent the past eight seasons in Portland. He is coming
off his best season with the Trail Blazers, averaging 15.8 points and 5.7
assists and shooting 91.5 percent from the foul line.

"Damon is an experienced veteran and proven leader on the court," said Jerry
West, the Grizzlies' president of basketball operations. "We feel we have
added a significant player to our team and know that he will help take us to
a different level than where we are today.

The 5-foot-10 guard was drafted in the first round by Toronto in 1995 and
was the 1996 rookie of the year. He was traded to Portland 49 games into the
1997-98 season. He left Portland ranked second behind Terry Porter for
career 3-pointers and third in assists.

It's been two years since the whole marijuanaincident. I haven't touched marijuana. I'm not really too concerned aboutthat. I think the biggest thing about that is that I'm not scared totalkabout it."Stoudamire said he encountered some preconceived notions fromteams during the free agency process, but when he addressed questionshonestly and openly, teams seemed to gain better understanding andcomfort."That was the whole thing during free agency," Stoudamire said. "Iwas saying, 'Don't let the perception fool you.' "Stoudamire, who in Dec.2002 gave $250,000 to the Portland Interscholastic League to save springsports, said he will do just as much in the Memphis community. As much as hegave the Blazers, he said, he got plenty in return.

Not me, I will miss him.
It is good he moved on for his own sake and for Telfairs' development with
the blazers rebuilding.
I am glad he went to a team I like a little and wish him the best.
I was slightly surprised he did not take less money and go with Houston at
this point of his career, but likely he also considered he is a better fit
on the grizz.
