PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Volatile forward Bonzi Wells was traded by the
Portland Trail Blazers to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday for guard
Wesley Person and a conditional 2004 first-round draft pick.

Wells, averaging 12.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists, was
stripped of his co-captaincy and suspended two games earlier this
season for cursing at coach Maurice Cheeks.

Wells also was fined last month for making an obscene gesture at a fan
after a loss to Philadelphia. Last March, Wells was suspended one game
for conduct considered detrimental to the team.

``We are very hopeful that this opportunity provides a fresh start for
Bonzi in Memphis, and that he enjoys joining a rising young team in
the Grizzlies,'' Memphis president Jerry West said. ``We're very
optimistic Bonzi will provide a significant presence in our lineup.''

On March 21 in Los Angeles, former Celtics great (who broke the hearts
of many Lakers fans) Bill Russell had his picture on the scoreboard.
The fans gave him a long ovation.
The previous night, when it was announced that Shaq O'Neal scored his
20,000th point, the fans in Sacramento booed. Then, to make matters
worse, a the game ball was defaced, presumably by a Sacramento fan.

Heard on the Memphis sports talk shows that John Nash called him with
the offer.

If I'm John Nash, I'm wondering why Russell Crowe was in a movie about me.

Wait, no, wrong guy.

If I'm John Nash, I take a long, hard look at my roster and try to figure
out where I can make changes to try to mend the relationship the Blazers
have with the fans. Pre-Whitsitt it seemed like a lovefest, but from what
I've seen from when I've been in Portland, that's pretty much gone.
They're 16th in the NBA in attendance, which IIRC is a departure from what
they were drawing during the Drexler days.

I say make some sacrifices, try to move some of the "troubled" players,
and bite the bullet. The team won't be as talented, and probably won't win
as much, but the financial ramifications of trying to win back some of the
fans will probably be worth it in the long run.

I think that's what he just did with the Bonzi trade. Although in Bonzi's
case it was also driven as much by the Portland media as by the fans.
(For example several people who were at the game in which he gave the finger
said they thought those "fans" deserved to get flipped off).

Which isn't bad considering the size of the market...

I'm not sure about that. They did have a pretty good sellout streak at one
point, but before the Rose Garden opened they also played in one of the
smallest arenas in the league.

Easier said than done. Wallace can be let go at the end of this season, but
Stoudamire and Patterson are difficult to move due to their contracts.

The record low for the RG is 1000 more than than a sold out MC.

Lord knows. It's like he's got a spell he can cast on them that allows
him to take control over their bodies, even when their minds know they
are getting screwed.
